Simone Green recalls being around nine years old at church, and hearing her cousin sing The Clark Sisters “You Brought the Sunshine.” In that moment, Green said that she realized that she wanted to be a singer. She said that she has been pursuing her dream ever since that day in church. Green recently released the single “Black Queen,” which is available on all streaming platforms.
Green said that “Black Queen” was birthed out of a reinvention for herself. She has overcome being a two-time breast cancer survivor, she is also a business owner and a wife. She said the song is truly a definition of survival, visibility and intention. She said it is also about resilience for Black women.
“All too often we’re underrepresented, even though we truly are the center of everything,” she said. “It’s really a moment for Black women to hold their heads up and acknowledge and recognize the queens that they are, in every sense of the word.”
Green has opened for performers including DJ Jazzy Jeff, Ledisi and Dru Hill. Green said that when she sits down to write music, she really thinks about where she is, in that moment in time and in life. She also thinks about the audience and how they will receive the music. She said as a middle-aged Black woman, so many women can relate to a lot of the things that she has been through and what she is going through. Because of that, she feels that what she writes about in her songs will truly resonate with other women.
“Black Queen” is the first single from her similarly titled EP. Green said she is finishing up the final songs and hopes to have it released by late April. She said the process of recording the EP has been really exciting. She has been involved in the writing of every song on the EP. She said it has been a fantastic experience.
“Just being in the studio and helping with the arranging and all of the variety of music that I have on this project, it’s my best work to date and I can’t wait to share it with the world,” she said.
Green said that she hopes listeners love the music. She said it isn’t just a song for girl power, it is emotional sovereignty. She described it as softness without an apology and luxury, without all of the guilt, and truly healing, without shame. She said she hopes people can listen to it and find joy. Green said that her stint as Madame ZinZanni with Teatro ZinZanni caused her to catch the acting bug. She said it was a wonderful experience and it was so much fun. She said while it was her first theatrical experience, it will not be her last.
